Tell us about your sports and fitness background:
Played Rugby all through school until I was 30.
Played Australian Rules football, in Vancouver for 4 years
Have been involved in weight Training since I was 18.
How did you first get exposed to Crossfit? Take us back to your first WOD…what was it? How did it feel?
I was getting board of just running and going through the same old gym routine and not really ever seeing any real physical results. I was stressed from school, was about 25 lbs overweight and really just miserable. One day I ran up a flight of stairs and was completely winded, at the point I realized I needed to make a change. I read up about Crossfit and was impressed how intense it was, at that point I decided in order to make a change with how I looked and felt, Crossfit was going to be the best option for me.
My first WOD was the “Fithy Fifty”. I read the WOD on the board and asked someone if we had to do that all in one day. I was nervous and apprehensive, but the group on members that was there that day were completely supportive and welcoming, making that much easier to complete the WOD. After I was left spent, but completely hooked and knew this was going to make a huge difference for me.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF?
The changes I have noticed in my body is that I lost 30 lbs in a year and am the strongest I have ever been. I am able to run 5k with not issue and I am much happier with how I look and feel.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like Crossfit that were totally unexpected?
For myself fitness was always something I felt I had to do, but with Crossfit it is something I want to do. I have found that I look forward to going to the WOD, not just for the physical aspects, but for the social as well. I have made friends and connections to people I normally would have never had the chance to meet. The social aspect was completely surprising to me. Every other type of fitness programming I have tried seemed to be missing that piece and left me losing interest quickly. I am much happier after having been apart of the CFK family.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit moments:
During a warm-up of skipping, the gym was very busy and there was not much room. While I was skipping my foot started to cramp, I stopped and moved towards a pillar to stretch my foot. While heading towards the pillar I was struck in the face with someone’s rope. As I grabbed my eye I heard Fynn from across the room “Neufeld get your shit together!” I am not sure why, but that has always stuck with me and Fynn does make me tell that story to others.
Also how exited Robyn was when I hit a 405 dead lift as show in the picture below:
Any advice for people just getting started?
I would recommend taking it slow and not worrying about your numbers to start. Learn the tech and enjoy the atmosphere. When you are enjoying yourself and not worried about an RX, those numbers will come.
What are your hobbies, interests and or talents outside of CF?
Right now I am a full time student competing my degree and has take up most if not all of my time. Not sure if I would call it a hobby or talent, but I do enjoy learning.
