Steve Iliakis is participating in the 2012 Ride to Conquer Cancer. It’s a 250 kilometer ride from Vancouver to Seattle benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation. Steve has participated the last 3 years and has raised over $15k for the foundation. Riding with The Adelphia Group which has raised over $73k this year.
Steve completed his first ride in 2010 and while it was a great accomplishment for him, he felt the effects following the ride. His wife Nora can confirm Steve was in serious pain when he completed the ride and could barely move or walk for days.
The following year, Steve began raising money for the BC Cancer Foundation and training for the 2011 ride. One week prior to the actual event, Steve was on a training ride out to Horseshoe Bay when he flipped over his bike going 65 km/hour. Apart from road rash and bruised bones and sprained ligaments, he walked away from the accident. He wasn’t able to participate and spent the next 5 months in physiotherapy rehabilitating his injuries. He is looking to make it up to all those who donated/sponsored him last year.
His physiotherapist mentioned the only way to keep the back and neck pain away is to start exercising and strengthening his core. This was right about the time Nora had started her elements classes at Crossfit Kitsilano. She convinced Steve to do an intro class with Fynn. Steve committed in December 2011 to giving Crossfit a try for 3 months. He has now been with us for 6 months and he is looking forward to the next 6months.
He is hoping the training he has done at Crossfit Kitsilano will keep him pain free for the days to follow the ride.
